Hi, I’m Erin. And I have no idea how to garden.

Watering my bed at the Meiners Oaks Community Garden, aka my laboratory.

Going to Seed is a chronicle of my education as a beginning gardener in Ojai, California — a small, glorious, agricultural town 90 minutes from Los Angeles where my husband and I very unexpectedly moved in January 2025 after the Palisades Fire left our house uninhabitable (and where I’ve legitimately had Zillow alerts set since at least 2014).

Why should anyone care about the fact that I want to learn how to garden? I have no idea, maybe they won’t! However, Going to Seed will be much more than personal tales of me playing in the dirt.

Using my 18 years of experience as a style journalist & editor for publications including the Los Angeles Times, The Hollywood Reporter and Vogue Australia, among others, you can expect to find the following here:

  • Expert interviews and tips on how to grow food, flowers, and other beautiful things. Whether you have a single pot on a terrace or legit land, think of this as Gardening for Dummies but with flair. We’ll be learning together, because I have no idea how to do any of this either and need help.

  • Garden & farm tours. When I first dreamt up Going to Seed, I was living in a VRBO (a wonderful VRBO on a truly magical Ojai farm that you’ll def. read about here). But now that I live in my own house again, I need the kitchen garden tours of interesting, creative people with beautiful taste — on hand.

  • Product recs. For sun hats. Italian gardening clogs. Handmade terra cotta planters from a hippie who lives in East Austin. Really good Australian sunscreen that actually rubs in. Simple trowels — and the info needed to pick out a good one — so you can actually plant things.

  • Places recs. Gorgeous gardens in wonderful cities that you should really consider visiting (along with the interesting restaurants and shops nearby that you shouldn’t miss while you’re there).

  • And of course, yes, there will be personal tales of triumph and certain disaster as I attempt to get semi-proficient at this.

For now, all Going to Seed subscriptions will be free of charge. And my goal is to publish every (other?) Saturday. Of course these things can change later. But we’ll see how it all goes.

So please join me on this weird journey and subscribe (and tell anyone else you know who might be interested in all things gardening, too — I’m offering gifts as thanks for referrals!).

At one of our favorite restaurants in Ojai the day we closed on our house, after months of living in a vacation rental. I was pleased.

About Me.

I’m a journalist, author and content technologist who currently works at Netflix, where I’m responsible for audience growth for our company’s digital editorial fan site, Tudum.com. I’ve been writing and launching digital things for a really long time.

I began my career as a fashion journalist on staff at the Los Angeles Times before co-founding and acting as publisher of digital style and culture publication Style Section L.A. I went on to work with designer Kelly Wearstler as her director of digital content before ending up at The Hollywood Reporter, where as digital style director I launched and helmed the brand's digital style and beauty vertical, Pret-a-Reporter. In 2015, I bought a one-way ticket to Sydney and ended up at Vogue Australia. And when I got back to the States, I made the leap to entertainment as the Vice President of Social Editorial for Sony Pictures Television and got to work on Jeopardy! (what is, random yet very fun?).

I’ve co-authored three books: two with OG digital influencer Aimee Song and one with super hair colorist Tracey Cunningham, all of which were published by Abrams. When I’m not being a corporate girlie, I can be found consulting for brands and publications including Surface Media, C Magazine Publishing, 11 Honore and Rachel Goodwin Makeup. My writing has appeared in Entrepreneur, Vanity Fair, Style.com, Elle.com, Time Out Chicago, Departures and Los Angeles Magazine, among others. In 2023 and 2025, I attended the Napa Valley Writers’ Conference for fiction.

My husband Bradley and I currently split our time between the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles and Ojai. He likes plants too.
